Libras make pleasant friends and companions, though their indecisiveness can irritate more assertive types. Perhaps to compensate for their difficulty in making decisions, Libras are often drawn to decisive, strong, and even stubborn individuals.
Peaceful and Harmonious
Preserving harmonious relations with friends and lovers at all times is extremely important to Libras. They prefer not to argue and usually won’t rise to any sort of bait, which can make relations very smooth. However, some of the more forthright zodiacal types may perceive Libras as deceptive as they tend to hide their feelings in order to preserve the peace. Because of this tendency, Libras are often easy to live with but hard to know, but it also lowers the likelihood of escalating conflicts in friendships or romantic relationships.
Conflict-Avoidant
Some Libras can take conflict avoidance to a nearly pathological level, making themselves scarce whenever a partner or friend wants to discuss any sort of emotionally charged issue. When Libras get into a long-term relationship, they must force themselves to express their feelings, even those that might cause friction, or they may become resentful toward their partners for not understanding them. On the positive side, typical Libras are not inclined to make emotional scenes or pick fights, and tend to handle disagreement in a classy and restrained manner.
Sociable and Relationship-Oriented
Gracious, charming, and socially adept, Libras usually have many friends, and they have a need to get out and interact frequently, as well as to flirt with and charm others. However, they also have a powerful need for a permanent partner, without which they tend to feel incomplete. Ideal partners and friends for a Libra are extroverted, laid back, open-minded, patient, and not at all combative. Pushy individuals will cause the Libra to avoid or retreat from interactions.
Reasonable and Logical
Libras are inclined to give others a fair hearing, listening with an open mind to the other person’s side of an argument before making up their minds. They tend to reason things through rather than responding with knee-jerk emotional reactions. Typical Libras like to explore an issue from all angles, and so friends and lovers who pressure them for quick decisions or demand that they automatically side with one person over another can cause great anxiety. A particularly traumatic situation for a Libra is one in which two friends have a falling out with the Libra caught in the middle.
The Atypical Libra
The sun sign isn’t the only element that influences personality. Aspects and planetary placements, particularly the moon sign and rising sign (ascendant), are also important. For example, a Libra with Aries rising will be far more assertive and decisive than the typical Libra, and with Cancer rising, a Libra may be more intuitive and less logical in his or her reactions.
There are many websites that offer free chart calculation to determine other planetary placements and aspects. Learning these other planetary placements is recommended, as it provides a more comprehensive personality profile.
