Romantic Compatibility with Other Astrology Signs

Traditional astrological wisdom holds that Aquarians are most compatible with Aries, Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, and least compatible with Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio and Capricorn. But what do the actual marriage and divorce statistics say?

Mathematician Gunter Sachs conducted a large-scale study of sun signs and found statistically significant results on a number of measures. Marriage and divorce findings are outlined below.

Aquarius Men

Aquarius men most often marry Aquarius women, and they are least likely to marry Tauruses and Scorpios. As for divorce, they part ways most frequently with Gemini and Cancer women, but are least likely to divorce Aries and Leo.

Two Aquarians have shared interests, tolerate one another’s quirks and idiosyncrasies, and give one another plenty of personal freedom. Although Aquarians can be naturally contrary because they enjoy the intellectual stimulation of a good debate, they are not inclined to engage in damaging emotional arguments.

It is unsurprising that Aquarius has less luck with Taurus, Scorpio and Cancer. These are all signs prone to jealousy, and Aquarians may find them too possessive.

Unexpectedly, Aquarians and Geminis also have a higher-than-average divorce rate, though this may occur more due to a lack of sticking power than incompatibility. Because both signs are impulsive, easily bored and inclined to seek novelty, neither one may push very hard for a commitment, and things may just dissolve naturally as one or both wander off in search of something new.

Aries and Aquarius are both signs inclined toward honesty, generosity, extroversion, political interest or activism, and trying new things. As such, they have a better-than-average likelihood of holding each other’s interest. And although Leo and Aquarius are supposedly incompatible, they do share some of the same common traits that Aquarius shares with Aries, namely sociability, generosity and forthrightness, which may be the foundation for many of the longer-lasting matches.

Aquarius Women

Aquarius women marry Aquarius men most often, but tend to avoid marrying Leos. They are less likely to divorce Sagittarius than any other sign. As for who they are most inclined to divorce, there was no statistically significant result for any sign.

Matches between Aquarius and Sagittarius may be favored because neither is particularly inclined toward possessiveness, and both are highly extroverted, so they are likely to share a good social life together. Both tend to have in interest in either social or political causes and the exploration of philosophical issues, and both are somewhat inclined to eccentricity and even problems with authority in some cases.

Why do Aquarius women avoid marrying Leos while Leo women seem to be a good prospect for Aquarius men? It may be that Leo men are less inclined to accommodate the Aquarian need for independence and freedom than are Leo women.

Best Match

An Aquarius is the best match for another Aquarius, though the fire signs of Aries, Sagittarius and Leo also show promise for long-term love.

Study Findings and Traditional Astrological Predictions

For the most part, study findings for Aquarius are in line with traditional astrological predictions. Aquarians choose other Aquarians, and stay with compatible signs such as Aries and Sagittarius most often, while avoiding incompatible signs such as Taurus and Scorpio and divorcing the incompatible sign of Cancer at above-average rates.

However, there are two gender-specific findings that go against traditional astrological wisdom. Aquarius men are more inclined to divorce the theoretically compatible sign of Gemini and stay with the theoretically incompatible sign of Leo.

Incompatible Matches

Aquarians who find themselves romantically entangled with one of the less compatible signs should not despair. Plenty of marriages between supposedly incompatible signs have lasted.

Astrology is complex, and there is more to take into account than just sun signs. Two people with incompatible sun signs may have highly compatible rising signs (ascendants) or moon signs that can make the difference between a bad match and a good match with a bit of an “edge” that keeps things interesting.
