Horoscopes, stars, astrology, etc. are not "New Age" although they are to be found in a lot of New Age beliefs. While we have had "horoscopes" in newspapers for decades, it has only been recently that people have been openly interested in further aspects of astrology.
What Are Horoscopes For?
Horoscopes are a way to predict the future. In the Western world, it is the most familiar form of divination. Those who read horoscopes in the media usually do so for fun and don't often assume it is correct although some people can interpret horoscopes in such a way that they appear accurate to them.
Are Horoscopes Accurate?
When talking about horoscopes in newspapers and magazines, the simple answer is "no". Of course they are not going to be accurate. They may, coincindentally, be correct about certain events, but with only 12 "Star" signs and billions of different people, there are more than 12 types of people and anything claimed within a short paragraph aimed at anyone who reads a magazine is not going to reflect what happens to every single person who was born at that particular time of year.
However, it is possible to have a personal horoscope which considers other astrological data such as rising signs, houses, angles and aspects. As this uses a lot more data, it becomes more personal and, whilst it is possible that it is still not entirely accurate, it will be a lot more accurate than a random paragraph which is supposed to apply to millions, even billions, of people. Although, oftentimes, these media horoscopes are so generic that they could apply to billions of different people.
What Are Sun Signs?
Sun Signs are the signs used in media horoscopes. They were previously referred to (and still are in most media) as Star Signs.
The Sun Sign is the sign in which the Sun was at the time of birth. The signs are in the same place each year so it is possible to apply a sign for every few months within a day or two.
What Do These Signs Mean?
It is thought that people born under each sign have particular characteristics. There are so many different aspects as well as different signs, along with their own interpretation.
The signs give descriptions of people born under them. Sometimes people can be born on a "cusp" which means they are born in between two signs when the Sun is moving between them. This can mean that the person inherits characteristics from two different signs.
